GCUF semester rules, in plain words
What the GCUF Students' Hand Book of Semester Rules (2025) means for your GPA and CGPA.
Credit hours and marks
- One credit hour is one hour of theory a week through the semester; a 1-credit lab is two to three contact hours a week.
- For evaluation, one credit hour carries 20 marks: a 3-credit course is out of 60, a 4-credit course out of 80.
- No course carries more than 4 credit hours. A course written 3(2-1) has 3 credit hours: 2 theory and 1 practical.
- A BS programme needs at least 130 credit hours over 4 to 6 years; LLB and Pharm-D need 164 over 5 to 7 years.
- A BS student takes 15–18 regular credit hours a semester, plus up to 6 repeat credit hours (21–24 in all).
How a course is marked
- Mid-semester exam, in the 9th week: 30% of the marks.
- At least two assignments and two quizzes or presentations: 20%.
- Final exam: 50%. A student absent from the final is considered failed.
- Theory and practical are passed separately, with at least 40% overall (50% in engineering and pharmacy programmes).
Attendance
- Below 75% attendance in a course, you cannot sit its final exam.
- The Dean can condone up to 5% on the Chairperson's recommendation, and the Vice Chancellor a further 5%.
Grades
- Grades run from A (85% and above, 4.00) down to D (40–44%, 1.00 to 1.40); below 40% is F. See the grade point table.
- An F must be repeated when the course is next offered, and the F stays on the transcript.
- I (Incomplete) is given when a student sat the mid but missed the final for reasons beyond their control; the final can be taken within two months, or the I becomes F.
- W (Withdrawn) is not counted in GPA or CGPA. Deficiency and audit courses are pass/fail and also not counted.
- Students scoring 90% or above in a course are placed on the Dean's Honour List.
Probation, dropping and the degree (BS)
- After the first academic year (including summer) you need a CGPA of 1.70.
- A CGPA from 1.70 to below 2.00 at the end of an academic year means promotion on probation. BS allows two probations.
- Below 1.70 you are dropped from the rolls (checked again at the end of the 5th, 7th and later semesters).
- A student dropped in the 6th semester may be awarded a two-year Associate Degree on request.
- You need a CGPA of 2.00 to complete the degree. CGPA is reported to two decimals; ties are broken by weighted percentage marks.
MS, MPhil and PhD
- MS/MPhil: a CGPA of 2.50 is needed for the degree.
- PhD: a CGPA of 3.00 is needed at the end of coursework; from 2.70 to below 3.00 one attempt is allowed to repeat up to two courses.
Repeating and improving
- Undergraduate and Master students may repeat courses graded below C.
- Both grades appear on the transcript, but only the better one counts in your CGPA, marked "(repeat)".
- A course can be taken at most three times (the first attempt and two repeats).
- No position, medal or roll of honour is given for a degree passed on a second attempt or with a CGPA improved by repeats.
